Gaza hospitals reduce operations by 80% amid fuel crisis

The medical system in the Gaza Strip is experiencing a major and escalating collapse due to intense targeting across the territory, according to Bassam Zaqout, Director of Medical Relief in Gaza. Intensive strikes have been reported in eastern Gaza City, the Al-Rimal neighborhood, and through artillery shelling in eastern Khan Younis.

Medical facilities are facing a severe shortage of generator oil, which is essential for maintaining electricity. Consequently, some hospitals and medical centers have been forced to reduce their operating hours by 70% to 80%. Operational capacity in operating rooms has reached a minimum due to insufficient staff and lack of electricity, particularly at night when darkness and destroyed roads hinder ambulance movement.

Zaqout highlighted that strict restrictions and resource shortages are the primary obstacles to restoring medical services. He also warned of the humanitarian consequences regarding the inability to recover remains from under rubble and the harsh conditions faced by detained medical personnel.
