Gaza humanitarian crisis deepens after 1,000 days of siege
More than 1,000 days after the Israeli siege began, Gaza faces a catastrophic humanitarian collapse. Cumulative casualties have risen to over 73,000 dead and 173,000 injured, with children bearing the brunt—21,730 killed, 45,113 injured and 59,054 left orphaned. The health system is on the verge of total failure: all 40 hospitals and 158 primary health centers have been attacked, leaving only a handful partially operational and resulting in the death or detention of more than 1,700 medical workers.
Violence continues despite a ceasefire declared in October 2023. Recent Israeli drone strikes in the Nuseirat refugee camp killed six civilians, including the bodyguard of a Hamas spokesperson. Since the ceasefire began, Palestinian health authorities report more than 1,090 additional deaths, while Israeli forces have lost five soldiers and one contractor. International media attention remains focused on other regional tensions, leaving the daily suffering in Gaza largely unreported.
Humanitarian agencies warn that the combined impact of sustained attacks, food insecurity, water shortages and disrupted education threatens the long‑term stability of the enclave and the well‑being of its remaining population.
