Antonio Guterres calls for permanent Gaza ceasefire

As the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel approaches, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Guterres emphasized the need for large-scale humanitarian assistance and strict adherence to international law to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation.

The October 7 attacks resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages. In the ensuing military campaign, Gaza health authorities report that over 74,200 Palestinians have been killed. While a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump in October 2025 provided some relief, Guterres noted it has not yet ensured lasting security or adequate aid.

Reports indicate severe impacts on civilians, including widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and high casualties among journalists. In Gaza, the humanitarian crisis is marked by shortages of clean water, food, and medical supplies, with many women and children facing extreme risks. The United Nations has affirmed the reliability of the casualty figures reported by Gaza health authorities.
