Gaza Health Ministry reports 466 starvation deaths since 2024

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that 466 Palestinians, including 157 children and 189 elderly individuals, have died from malnutrition and starvation since 2024. These figures, released on World Food Day, highlight a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Health officials warn that more than 1.4 million people, approximately 67% of the population, are expected to face crisis-level food insecurity or worse through the end of 2026. Acute malnutrition has significantly impacted vulnerable groups; between 2024 and August 2026, over 158,000 cases of acute malnutrition were recorded among children under five.

The crisis has also severely affected maternal health. The rate of anemia among pregnant women rose to 61% in 2026, up from 41% before the conflict. Additionally, nearly 4,000 pregnancy losses were recorded in the first half of 2026, a figure more than triple that of the previous six-month period.

UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations have noted that while recent ceasefires have allowed some aid to enter, the threat of famine remains fragile. The ministry has called on the international community and the United Nations to ensure the safe, sustained, and unrestricted entry of food, medical supplies, and nutritional supplements into the enclave.
