Humanitarian impact of conflict in Gaza and West Bank

Overview

Reports from Palestinian ministries and international agencies have detailed the extensive humanitarian and social toll of the ongoing conflict. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education stated that more than 800 teachers have been killed and over 3,300 injured since October 2023. Data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health indicates that 21,976 children have been killed, accounting for approximately 29.6% of total fatalities.

UNICEF has reported that 351 Palestinian children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire was announced in October 2025. In a recent six-day period, the agency documented the deaths of eight children and injuries to approximately 20 others. Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, described the level of violence against children as “unacceptable” and called for transparent accountability regarding these incidents.

Approximately 800,000 children remain displaced, mostly living in tents or damaged buildings. UNICEF notes that 60,000 children have lost one or both parents and nearly all require psychological support due to trauma. Recent data from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) indicates that three years of military offensive and mass displacement have caused devastating mental health impacts, with children experiencing overwhelming anxiety, sleep disorders, and distress. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the number of people in Gaza requiring urgent psychosocial and mental health support has more than doubled, rising from 485,000 to over one million.

Essential services such as sanitation and wastewater treatment remain largely non-functional. The healthcare system has been severely impacted, with all 38 hospitals in Gaza targeted. Food insecurity and malnutrition have reached critical levels, with significant mortality recorded among children and the elderly.
