Gaza mosques: 1,244 religious sites targeted by Israeli forces since October 2023
Gaza's Government Media Office reports that Israeli forces have targeted 1,244 of the 1,275 mosques in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. Of these, 1,077 mosques have been completely destroyed. Recent strikes have impacted the Abu Salim Mosque in Deir al-Balah and the Asqalan Mosque prayer hall in the northern Shati refugee camp.
The Media Office stated that Israeli forces have killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and injured over 174,000 others since the conflict began. They also reported that more than 21,500 Palestinian children have been killed.
In response to kites reaching Israeli areas from Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have threatened to increase assassinations and evacuate residential neighborhoods. However, the Israeli military stated that four kites recovered near Gaza contained no suspicious materials and posed no danger to the public. The military maintains that strikes on religious sites are conducted to target Hamas weapons caches and military infrastructure.
Separately, the UN Human Rights Office spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, described Israeli threats to deport Palestinians from Gaza as ‘brutal’, noting that such rhetoric shows a disregard for international human rights law.
