Israel threatens military escalation and evacuations over Gaza kite launches

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have issued a joint warning to Hamas, stating that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will intensify targeted operations and order the evacuation of populations in areas used to launch kites, drones, or balloons from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli territory.

Defense Minister Katz announced a ‘zero tolerance’ policy, declaring that kites and balloons will be treated as security threats equivalent to drones, regardless of whether they contain explosives. This follows reports of several kites drifting into southern Israeli communities, including Kibbutz Nahal Oz, though the IDF confirmed recent finds contained no dangerous materials.

The United Nations has condemned the threat of mass expulsion, with spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani describing the rhetoric as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘outrageous.’

In Gaza, local popular committees and humanitarian organizations have urged parents to prevent children from flying kites to protect them from potential Israeli military retaliation. Hamas has denied responsibility for the launches, asserting that the kites are being flown by children for recreation.
