Gaza province malaria cases increase by over 100%

Malaria cases in Mozambique's Gaza province have increased by more than 100% compared to the previous year. Provincial Health Director Mulassua Simango reported 34,019 cases in the first half of the year, up from 11,267 during the same period in 2025. The disease currently has a prevalence rate of 6.1%, meaning approximately six out of every 100 people are infected.

In response, health authorities are preparing an integrated campaign to combat the spread. The intervention includes the distribution of an estimated 871,416 mosquito nets to approximately 313,711 households, covering a population of over 1.1 million people. The plan also involves mass medication administration and the distribution of albendazole to 375,130 children aged 5 to 14.

Indoor residual spraying will be concentrated in six specific districts: Chibuto, Mandlakazi, Chókwè, Guijá, Bilene, and Limpopo. The broader campaign will span 13 districts to optimize logistical resources and reach communities, including those in difficult-to-access areas.
