Malaria and cholera outbreaks in Southern Africa
Overview
In Mozambique’s Gaza province, malaria cases rose by more than 100% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 34,019 cases. Health authorities responded by planning an integrated campaign involving the distribution of approximately 871,416 mosquito nets, mass medication administration, and indoor residual spraying across 13 districts.
Regional health concerns expanded as Namibia reported a significant malaria resurgence, with 122,612 confirmed cases and 122 deaths recorded since the start of the year. Simultaneously, Mozambique faced a cholera epidemic that resulted in over 9,700 infections and 91 deaths, with Nampula, Tete, and Cabo Delgado provinces being among the most affected areas.
