Gaza reconstruction contingent on Hamas disarmament amid UNRWA funding controversy

A senior U.S. official stated that any rebuilding of Gaza will be halted until Hamas is completely dismantled, rejecting proposals for partial reconstruction or a technocratic administration that would leave the group’s weapons intact. The official emphasized that the United States “insists on 100% dismantlement” of Hamas before any civilian authority can take over reconstruction efforts.

Separate investigations have alleged that UNRWA employees took part in the Oct. 7 attacks, leading to the dismissal of nine staff members and prompting 17 donor countries to suspend funding. While most donors have since resumed contributions, the controversy has raised questions about the agency’s role and future financing.
