Gaza refugee committee warns against UNRWA service cuts

The Joint Committee of Palestinian Refugees in the Gaza Strip has issued an urgent warning regarding the consequences of restructuring and service reductions being implemented by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

The committee expressed deep concern over recent developments, including the termination of staff and program cuts, specifically noting recent measures affecting the Microfinance and Development Department. They argued that UNRWA’s financial crisis should not evolve into a crisis of services and rights for Palestinian refugees and employees.

The committee called for an immediate halt to any reductions affecting essential services—such as education, health, relief, and protection—or the job security of workers. They urged UNRWA management to be transparent about its restructuring plans and to involve representatives of refugees and staff in decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the committee called on the United Nations and donor nations to fulfill their political and financial responsibilities by providing sustainable funding. They highlighted UN General Assembly Resolution 80/78, which extended UNRWA’s mandate until June 30, 2029, as a basis for continued support.
