Gaza security escalates as Peace Council outlines post-war administration
Tensions remain high in the Gaza Strip as Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the death of Colonel Jamal Mahmoud Abu Kamil, the Gaza Governorate Police Director. The strike targeted his vehicle on Al-Rashid Street, causing further casualties. Local authorities described the assassination as a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law, occurring amidst ongoing violations of a previously announced ceasefire.
Parallel to the security situation, the Peace Council has announced that Hamas will be excluded from the future administration of the Gaza Strip. Under a proposed framework approved by the UN Security Council, a non-partisan, technocratic transitional administration will manage civil services and daily affairs. This plan includes the establishment of a National Committee for Gaza Management and a Gaza Reconstruction and Development Fund.
To ensure transparency, reconstruction funds will be placed under international oversight with strict controls to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing. Estimates from the World Bank, UN, and EU suggest that reconstruction needs for the Gaza Strip could reach approximately $71.4 billion over the next decade. While Hamas previously announced the dissolution of its local government to facilitate a transition to a technocratic committee, issues regarding security and weaponry remain unresolved.
