Gaza strike kills student Raghad Ashour, sparks international outcry

An Israeli airstrike on June 22, 2026 hit the al‑Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City, killing 17‑year‑old student Raghad Ashour, her family's only child, and paramedic Maysara Al‑Khawaja. Four others were wounded as the strike struck a busy area near schools and kindergartens.

Ashour’s funeral was held at Al‑Shifa Hospital, drawing mourners and highlighting the continuing toll of the conflict. Commentary accompanying the incident emphasised accusations that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide, citing International Court of Justice findings, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Israeli human‑rights groups that have labelled the campaign genocidal. The piece also referenced broader historic grievances dating back to 1948.

The strike underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where tens of thousands have been killed since the conflict escalated in 2023, and fuels debate over international legal responsibility.
