Gaza Strip: Israeli military control expands to 70% of territory

The Israeli military has reportedly expanded its control in the Gaza Strip, occupying between 67% and 70% of the territory. This expansion follows movement beyond the previously established "yellow line," which originally restricted military presence to approximately 53% of the area. Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Energy Minister Eli Cohen, have made statements regarding the destruction of territory and the intent to maintain control over large portions of the strip.

Satellite imagery and field reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are now crowded along a narrow coastal strip extending from Khan Younis to Gaza City. This coastal belt has become increasingly cramped due to consecutive waves of displacement and expanding military restrictions. The United Nations reported in June 2026 that access-restricted areas have grown to cover approximately 65% of Gaza.

Simultaneously, Israeli security and military institutions are preparing for a significant reduction in troop numbers within Gaza. Reports suggest a plan to return military deployment to levels similar to those seen before October 7, 2023. This could involve ending the mission of the 99th Division, leaving the "Gaza Division" as the primary force. This potential partial withdrawal is being discussed amid manpower shortages and logistical challenges, despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's stance on the necessity of dismantling Hamas.
