Gaza war marks 1,000 days amid ongoing ceasefire and regional tensions

It has been 1,000 days since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel sparked the war in Gaza. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, 2023, but Israel has expanded control, aiming to hold about 70% of the territory. Since the ceasefire began, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports 1,053 Palestinian deaths, including many women and children, and more than 3,400 wounded. Overall, the Gaza Health Ministry says Israeli strikes have killed roughly 73,066 Palestinians.

Humanitarian conditions remain dire, with over 2 million Palestinians displaced, limited access for aid, and UN warnings that Israeli expansion raises civilian risks. Efforts to implement the ceasefire’s next steps—Hamas disarmament, reconstruction, and deployment of an international stabilization force—have stalled, leaving the International Committee of the Red Cross and other agencies urging further action.

The conflict has expanded beyond Israel and Gaza, feeding a broader U.S.–Iran confrontation that also involves Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Observers note that international attention on Gaza’s plight has faded as the wider regional war dominates diplomatic focus.
