Gaza's Premature Babies Face Critical Shortages in Neonatal Care

Newborns in Gaza are confronting a severe health emergency as premature births have surged since the conflict intensified in October 2023. One in five infants now requires intensive neonatal or thermal care, yet hospitals lack essential equipment such as incubators, ventilators and vital medicines due to blockades and infrastructure damage.

Mothers report extreme stress, malnutrition and disrupted prenatal services, contributing to a sharp rise in miscarriages and birth complications. Health workers at Al‑Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and other facilities describe constant shortages that force difficult choices and jeopardize the survival of infants like Yazan Al‑Khalidi, who was born eight months early and remains on life‑support.

UN agencies, including UNICEF and UNRWA, have warned of a looming neonatal crisis and called for unhindered humanitarian aid to restore medical supplies and support maternal health across the Gaza Strip.
