Cyprus leaders meet to discuss peace process and confidence-building

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman met in the UN-controlled buffer zone to discuss the Cyprus problem. The discussions focused on methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures (CBMs).

While Christodoulides noted progress and common understanding on certain issues, Erhürman expressed concerns that recent domestic and external initiatives are eroding existing trust. The leaders failed to reach an agreement on new CBMs during this session. However, a document outlining previous convergences in the negotiations is expected to be completed within days.

A follow-up meeting between the leaders is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday or Friday. Additionally, there is the possibility of a joint meeting in New York with the UN Secretary-General or his envoy toward the end of September. UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar was unable to attend the recent proceedings due to health reasons.
