Turkey and Cyprus report rising traffic accidents and new safety measures

Turkey and Cyprus have reported various traffic incidents and new safety measures. In Turkey, Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced the ‘2026-2027 Motorcycle Inspection Action Plan’ to combat rising motorcycle accidents. The plan targets speeding, which accounts for 57% of fatal motorcycle accidents, and aims to crack down on an estimated 500,000 to 1 million unregistered motorcycle couriers.

Recent fatal accidents in Turkey include a head-on collision between a bus and a car in Gaziantep that left eight people dead, including a three-year-old child. Other incidents include a fatal shooting in Istanbul's Gaziosmanpaşa district and several single-vehicle accidents in Denizli, Konya, and Sakarya.

In Cyprus, weekly traffic reports indicate 58 accidents resulting in 23 injuries and nearly 4 million TL in damages. Authorities noted that speeding and driving without proper documentation were among the most frequent violations during recent inspections.
