GCC seeks stronger EU ties for food and energy security

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi has called for closer coordination with Europe to protect the supply chains of food, energy, and essential commodities.

Speaking in New York during the second Rome Coalition ministerial meeting on fertilizer availability and food security, Albudaiwi noted that maritime disruptions and high shipping costs are negatively impacting global trade. These pressures are contributing to rising food and commodity prices in both Europe and the Gulf regions.

The meeting, hosted by Italy and Croatia alongside the 81st UN General Assembly, included representatives from the MED9, the Arab League, the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and various European institutions. Discussions focused on securing food, fertilizer, and the transport of critical goods through major trade routes, specifically addressing pressures in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Black Sea.

Albudaiwi stated that GCC nations are strengthening supply chain resilience through investments in ports, pipelines, railways, roads, and strategic reserves. He emphasized the need for increased cooperation to mitigate risks affecting maritime transport and shipping insurance, advocating that the transport of food, fertilizer, and fuel be prioritized during periods of disruption.
