Gdańsk City Council applies to create Pomeranian metropolitan union

The Gdańsk City Council has officially submitted a request to the Polish government to establish a metropolitan union in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The proposed entity will operate under the name ‘Gdańsk Metropolitan Area’. The resolution passed with 27 votes in favor and 5 abstentions, following positive opinions from all involved municipalities and counties.

This move follows 15 years of cooperation between local governments in the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot region. The establishment of the union is expected to unlock significant funding; officials estimate that the region could receive over 150 million PLN in its first year, with potential long-term annual funding reaching 500 million PLN. These resources are intended for infrastructure, mobility, and higher education.

While the project aims to leverage the global brand of Gdańsk to benefit surrounding municipalities, some council members raised concerns regarding the expenditure of these large funds and the inclusion of smaller local government voices during the consultation process.
