Establishment of the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area

Overview

Local governments in the Pomeranian Voivodeship are moving to establish a new metropolitan union to replace the existing association that has operated in the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot region since 2015.

The Gdańsk City Council submitted a formal request to the Polish government to create the ‘Gdańsk Metropolitan Area’. Officials anticipate this new entity could unlock significant funding, with estimates suggesting over 150 million PLN in the first year and potential long-term annual resources reaching 500 million PLN for infrastructure, mobility, and higher education.

Following the proposal, sixty-one local governments voted on the official name of the union. The ‘Gdańsk Metropolitan Area’ was selected with 45 votes, defeating the alternative name ‘Metropolitan Area Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot’, which received 13 votes. While the move aims to leverage the global brand of Gdańsk, some officials expressed concerns regarding the representation of smaller municipalities and the equitable distribution of funds.
