Gdańsk Gets EU Funding for Baltic Hub Terminal and Expands Flood Protection

Baltic Hub Container Terminal in Gdańsk will receive a 220.6 million zł European Union grant that will cover about 40 % of a 554 million zł modernization programme. The project will electrify terminal operations, extend railway infrastructure, install advanced digital monitoring systems and add electric terminal tractors and additional quay cranes. The funding, granted under the FEnIKS programme, is described as a milestone for the terminal, which handled a record 2.76 million TEU in 2025 and employs over 1,500 people.

Separately, the city of Gdańsk has committed 675 million zł over the past five years to large‑scale flood‑defence works. The investments have created 30 retention reservoirs, 320 km of storm‑water sewers, 150 green‑retention solutions and 28 pumping stations, giving the city a total water‑storage capacity of roughly 760,000 m³—equivalent to about 300 Olympic‑size swimming pools. City officials highlight the cost‑effectiveness of the measures, noting that each złoty spent can prevent up to seven złotys in potential flood damage.
