Gdańsk port expansion and logistics hub

Overview

In early July 2026, the European Union approved funding for a Baltic Hub terminal at the Port of Gdańsk and for flood-protection measures along the waterfront. In August, the port authority concluded a competitive tender and signed a 30-year lease for a 27-hectare site adjacent to the deep-water T2 terminal. This agreement grants Baltic Hub Container Terminal the right to develop a modern intermodal hub, including a 750-metre rail siding and additional container storage and handling equipment.

Simultaneously, Orlen launched a new marine transshipment terminal on the Martwa Wisła in Gdańsk. Built primarily by Polish contractors at a cost of approximately 500 million PLN, the facility features a 380-metre quay with two berths and automated loading arms, capable of servicing vessels up to 10,000 DWT. The terminal is designed to handle an annual throughput of 1.8–2 million tonnes of products, including base oils, low-sulphur marine gas oil, xylene, FAME, ethanol, MTBE, and ETBE. In its first year, the terminal is expected to handle roughly 100 ships and transship about half a million tons. This infrastructure aims to enhance fuel logistics security and operational independence by allowing direct transshipment between the refinery and tankers, reducing reliance on rail, road, and external ports.

Complementary infrastructure projects were also initiated, including road upgrades to the DK57 and a 16.1-km bypass of Starogard Gdański, alongside Polregio’s order of six new Elf 3 electric trains to expand passenger rail capacity.
