Gdańsk train collision: Truck struck at level crossing in Poland
A passenger train collided with a heavy truck at a level crossing in Gdańsk, Poland, on Thursday. The incident occurred when the truck became trapped on the tracks as the safety barriers began to lower. CCTV footage shows the vehicle attempting to reverse to clear the tracks, but it remained stuck, leading to a high-impact collision with the PKP Intercity ‘Bachus’ train, which was traveling from Gdynia to Zielona Góra.
The collision caused severe damage to the truck's trailer and significant disruption to the rail network. While the train was carrying approximately 250 passengers, no major injuries were reported among them. The truck driver, a 42-year-old citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the train driver both sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
Polish Railway Lines (PLK) reported that witnesses had signaled the driver to break through the barrier to escape the tracks, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The accident caused extensive delays, with some reports indicating hundreds of train services were affected. Authorities and a special commission are investigating the circumstances of the crash to determine if there was a mechanical failure or driver error.
