Gdynia becomes Poland's First Modernist Urban UNESCO World Heritage Site

Poland's Baltic port city Gdynia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026, marking the first Polish entry recognised as a complete modernist urban complex. The decision was taken at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, highlighting the interwar centre’s white‑washed facades, curved balconies and ocean‑liner‑inspired architecture.

The inscription coincides with Gdynia’s centenary year, exactly one hundred years after the city received its rights. Celebrations include a Summer Birthday Night on 22 August 2026 with live music, outdoor cinema, food markets and a large drone show. The city also looks ahead to hosting the 2027 World Sailing Championships.
