Gdynia Maritime University launches tender for new training sailing ship

Gdynia Maritime University has announced a new tender for the design and construction of a three-masted training sailing ship intended to succeed the ‘Dar Młodzieży’. This follows a failed tender process in April that received no bids. The new procurement is an open, EU-wide ‘design and build’ procedure, with the deadline for submitting offers set for October 30.

The proposed vessel will measure approximately 112 meters in length and 15 meters in width, featuring a sail area of 3,300 m2. It will be equipped with a modern hybrid propulsion system consisting of a combustion engine and an electric motor providing approximately 1300 kW of power. The ship’s aesthetic design is intended to reference the ‘Dar Pomorza’, which currently serves as a museum ship.

Separately, discussions continue regarding the future of the current ‘Dar Młodzieży’. While local officials in Szczecin are lobbying to retain the vessel in their city after its service ends, representatives from Gdynia Maritime University stated that no such discussions have been initiated by the institution. The ship was originally built under an agreement intended to serve maritime academies in both Gdynia and Szczecin.
