Gdynia’s Modernist Centre Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List
On 27 July 2026, during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, the modernist centre of Gdynia, Poland, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The designated area covers about 87.9 hectares and contains roughly 450‑500 interwar modernist buildings, making it Poland’s 18th World Heritage site. Eighteen of the twenty‑one committee members voted in favour of the inscription. The decision coincided with Gdynia’s centenary celebrations and was welcomed by Polish officials, including Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska and Gdynia’s vice‑president Oktawia Gorzeńska. The nomination was prepared over more than two decades by scholars from the Faculty of Architecture of Gdańsk University of Technology and other experts, highlighting the city’s coherent modernist urban layout and its symbolic role in interwar Poland’s effort to secure a seaport.
