Gdynia’s Modernist Centre Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List
On 27 July 2026 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, South Korea, inscribed the Modernist Centre of Gdynia on its World Heritage List — the city’s centenary year. The decision was supported by 18 of the 21 voting members, giving the Polish nomination strong backing. The listed area covers about 87.9 hectares in Gdynia’s historic centre and contains roughly 450‑500 interwar modernist buildings, recognized for their outstanding universal value as a coherent urban ensemble. Polish officials, including Vice‑President Oktawia Gorzeńska and Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska, welcomed the inscription, describing it as a landmark achievement for the city and the nation.
UNESCO’s evaluation highlighted the site’s exemplary modernist urban planning, its integration of architecture with the port and public spaces, and its role as a symbol of Poland’s interwar ambition to secure a maritime gateway. The successful nomination reflects more than two decades of research, documentation, and diplomatic effort by local authorities, heritage experts and the Gdańsk University of Technology team that prepared the dossier.
