Gdyni’s Modernist Center Near UNESCO World Heritage Listing

Poland’s Modernist Centre in Gdyni is awaiting a decision at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea. Twenty‑one member states will vote on Sunday or Monday whether to inscribe the 87.9‑hectare historic district, bounded by streets such as Jana z Kolna, Wójta Radtkego and Marszałka Piłsudskiego, on the World Heritage List.

The area has been protected by local conservation plans since 2007 and overlaps the city’s historic monument zone. City vice‑president Oktawia Gorzeńska said a listing would not add new restrictions for property owners but could raise Gdyni’s international prestige, boost cultural tourism and improve access to national and EU heritage funding. The candidacy follows a 2025 “referral” recommendation, with experts noting the district’s exceptional universal value.
