GE Aerospace secures orders for U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer engines
GE Aerospace has received orders for eight LM2500 marine gas turbines to power two future U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyers: the USS Ray Mabus (DDG 147) and the USS Robert R. Ingram (DDG 149). Each vessel will utilize four engines.
The company expects demand for the Arleigh Burke program to continue through 2056. As of April 2026, the U.S. Navy operated 75 destroyers in this class, all of which are powered by LM2500 engines. GE reports a 99% reliability rate for these marine gas turbines, which have been in naval service since 1969.
Separately, the Indian Navy is working toward sovereign control over its LM2500 propulsion assets. This initiative focuses on developing an indigenous digital control, diagnostics, and fault-recording ecosystem. The goal is to bring the digital architecture for engine management and health assessment under Indian ownership to reduce dependency on foreign software and control systems.
