GE Vernova expands SMR deployment with projects in Canada and Sweden

GE Vernova is expanding its footprint in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) market through the deployment of its BWRX-300 technology. In Canada, the company is working on a project at the Darlington site in Ontario. This initiative involves the construction of four reactors, each with a capacity of approximately 300 megawatts, with the first unit expected to connect to the grid by 2029. The total estimated cost for all four units is approximately 20.9 billion Canadian dollars.

In Europe, Studsvik has entered an exclusive agreement with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T to develop a 1.2 GW SMR project in Sweden. The project, part of Studsvik’s ReFirm nuclear program, aims to deploy four BWRX-300 units at either the Nyköping or Valdemarsvik sites. The first unit in Sweden is projected to begin operations in the mid-2030s. The partnership involves a division of labor where Studsvik manages permitting and community engagement, while GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T handle reactor engineering and construction execution.
