GE Vernova: Infrastructure expansion and AI power demand
Overview
GE Vernova is capitalizing on rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers by expanding its footprint in power generation, transmission, and grid modernization. In Q2 2026, the company reported a 21.9% year-over-year revenue increase to $11.1 billion and a record backlog of $176 billion. While total organic orders surged 88% to $24.2 billion, the Wind segment saw a 40% decline in organic orders due to quality-control issues at projects like Vineyard Wind and Dogger Bank. Consequently, the company is downsizing its offshore business to avoid high-risk, fixed-price contracts.
Growth is heavily driven by the Power and Electrification segments. In the Electrification segment, orders rose 66% organically to $6.3 billion, with data-center orders exceeding $5 billion in the first half of 2026. To support energy-intensive facilities, the company is launching a medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (MV-UPS) designed to protect against electrical strain from sudden AI workload shifts; shipments are expected to begin in mid-2027.
GE Vernova is also expanding its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) presence via BWRX-300 technology. In Canada, the company is working on a four-reactor project at the Darlington site in Ontario, with the first unit expected to connect to the grid by 2029. In Sweden, a five-company consortium including GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Studsvik, Samsung C&T, GE Vernova’s Financial Services, and DS Investment Partners has signed an exclusive agreement to develop the 1.2 GW ReFirm nuclear programme. This project aims to deploy four BWRX-300 units at either Nyköping or Valdemarsvik, with the first reactor targeted for operation in the mid-2030s. Recent operational developments include supplying wind turbines for ESB’s Chleansaid wind farm in Scotland and a project in Venezuela intended to assist in stabilizing the national power grid within six to twelve months.
