Geely and BYD advance ultra-fast EV charging technologies

Chinese automotive manufacturers are rapidly advancing electric vehicle (EV) refueling technologies, specifically in ultra-fast charging and battery swapping. Geely is developing 1800kW-capable chargers that could potentially enable five-minute charging times. Michael Yang, Managing Director of Geely in the UK, indicated that the UK is a priority market for this technology, though implementation will require collaboration with local charging partners.

In Shanghai, real-world testing has compared BYD’s flash-charging hubs with NIO’s battery-swapping stations. Testing of BYD’s system showed a vehicle reaching 82% charge in approximately 14.5 minutes. Meanwhile, NIO’s fifth-generation swap stations allow for a consistent three-minute battery replacement regardless of the vehicle type.

Infrastructure expansion is significant in China, with BYD aiming for 20,000 flash chargers by the end of 2026 and NIO targeting approximately 4,600 power swap stations by the same period. These advancements highlight a technological gap between the current infrastructure in China and that of the United States.
