Chinese automotive brands expand global market share

Chinese automotive manufacturers are significantly increasing their presence across global markets, particularly in Europe and Brazil. In Brazil, Chinese brands now account for 18.7% of new vehicle registrations, with BYD leading the segment with 169,135 units through September 2026. Other notable players in the region include GWM, Caoa Chery, and Geely.

In Europe, the competitive landscape is shifting. Tesla saw a 72.5% sales increase in September 2026, but Chinese manufacturers are also advancing; BYD nearly doubled its registrations, and SAIC Motor saw a 24% increase. In Spain, BYD has overtaken MG to become the best-selling Chinese brand, recording a 105% growth compared to the previous year.

Manufacturing milestones are also being reached. Geely's electric hatchback, the EX2 (known as Xingyuan in China), reached a production milestone of one million units in October 2026, just two years after its launch. While Geely reported a slight decline in retail sales in China during the first nine months of 2026, the company is expanding production to Indonesia and Brazil to serve international markets.
