Geely Automobile sees export surge amid China's NEV growth

The Chinese automotive market is undergoing a structural shift characterized by declining domestic gasoline vehicle sales, record-high New Energy Vehicle (NEV) penetration, and surging exports.

Geely Automobile Holdings reported an 8% increase in total sales for August, reaching 270,194 units. However, this growth was driven entirely by a massive 205% surge in exports, which reached 101,094 units. This expansion offset a significant decline in domestic Chinese sales, which fell by an estimated 25.2% compared to the previous year. Geely has subsequently raised its annual export target from 640,000 to 920,000 units.

Broad market data from the China Passenger Car Association corroborates this trend. In August, NEV retail sales penetration in China reached a record 65.2%, while traditional gasoline vehicle sales plummeted by 40% year-on-year. While domestic passenger car retail volume saw a year-on-year decrease, total vehicle exports rose by 77.8%, accounting for 38% of total manufacturer sales. NEV exports specifically grew by 154.7%, making up over 58% of all passenger car exports.
