Geely founder Li Shufu steps down as Geely Auto chairman

Geely founder Li Shufu has stepped down as chairman of Geely Auto, effective August 18, 2026, as part of a planned leadership succession. He will remain chairman of the parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, and has been named honorary chairman for life of Geely Auto. An Conghui, formerly an executive director, succeeds him as chairman, while Gan Jiayue takes over as CEO, replacing Gui Shengyue.

The leadership transition occurs alongside significant financial shifts. Geely Auto reported record first-half 2026 revenue of 173.6 billion yuan (approximately $25.8 billion), a 15% increase year-on-year. While core net profit rose 46% to 9.68 billion yuan, overall net profit saw a slight decline due to fluctuations in foreign-exchange gains. The company's export volume surged 158% to 474,228 vehicles, helping to offset a decline in domestic Chinese sales.

Strategically, Geely is shifting toward international localization. The company announced plans to utilize Volvo's European manufacturing facilities to produce premium brands, specifically Zeekr and Lynk & Co, starting in 2028. This move aims to mitigate potential tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles. Additionally, Geely is investing in future technologies, aiming to pilot solid-state batteries with high energy density and potential ranges exceeding 1,000 km by 2027.
