Geely expands manufacturing in Malaysia and retail in Europe
Proton has reported a significant increase in exports, reaching 7,370 units between January and September 2026. This figure surpasses the total 6,000 units exported throughout 2025. A major driver of this growth is the production of selected Geely models at the Tanjong Malim manufacturing complex in Perak, Malaysia, which is being utilized as an international production hub.
This expansion allows Proton to leverage existing factory capacity and provides the local workforce with experience in meeting international manufacturing standards, including regulatory compliance and quality management. The Tanjong Malim complex maintains a production capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles.
Simultaneously, Geely is expanding its direct retail presence in the European market. While the group has maintained a presence in Europe for two decades through brands like Volvo, Polestar, Zeekr, and Lynk & Co, the core Geely brand is now being introduced directly to European showrooms. At the Paris Motor Show, Geely leadership stated the strategy will focus on product design and technology rather than aggressive discounting to establish its market position.
