Germany's EV market surges as Chinese brands gain ground

The German automotive market experienced a surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations in July 2026. Total new passenger car registrations rose 1.2% year-over-year to approximately 268,000. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a significant increase, accounting for 29.3% of all new registrations, with roughly 78,600 units newly registered.

This growth is largely attributed to government purchase subsidies and rising fuel costs for combustion engine vehicles. Data from Tibber indicates that in July, smart-charging EV owners spent an average of €3.52 per 100 km, significantly lower than the €14.49 spent on gasoline or diesel.

While the EV market is expanding, Chinese manufacturers are capturing a significant portion of this growth. BYD, for instance, reported a 365.4% sales increase in Germany. Conversely, established German brands like Volkswagen, Opel, and Porsche saw declines in their market share during the same period. To mitigate tariffs, manufacturers like XPeng have begun producing models in Austria to serve the European market.
