Geely rolls out new EV models to challenge BYD in the Philippines and Brazil
Geely introduced the EX5 EM‑i plug‑in‑hybrid SUV in the Philippines, priced at ₱1.288 million for the Pro trim and ₱1.468 million for the Max. The model claims about 1,000 km of combined range and targets families seeking electrified efficiency without frequent charging. BYD responded with the Seal battery‑electric sedan, starting at ₱1.998 million and offering a WLTP‑tested 510 km range, positioning the car as a more affordable alternative to premium EVs.
In Brazil, Geely launched the EX2 compact hatchback, produced locally at the Complexo Ayrton Senna plant in São José dos Pinhais until the end of 2026. The EX2 is offered in Pro (R$123,800) and Max (R$136,800) versions, features rear‑wheel drive, a 116‑hp motor, and aims to compete directly with BYD’s electric offerings. While praised for equipment levels and driving dynamics, reviewers note shortcomings in fit‑and‑finish, ergonomics, connectivity and sound insulation. Both launches reflect Geely’s strategy to broaden its electric and hybrid portfolio and to contest BYD’s growing presence in emerging markets.
