Greece expands highway network and sees traffic rise amid new road works
The 181‑km E65 highway linking Grevena with Lamia has been handed over to traffic, cutting travel time between the two points to roughly ten minutes. The project is part of a broader effort to improve connectivity, including a new road axis that will link the Port of Piraeus directly to the Attiki Odos motorway.
GEK TernA reported that average daily traffic (ADT) on the Attiki Odos rose 2.4% to about 290,775 vehicles, while the Egnatia Odos saw a 2.9% increase to roughly 219,458 vehicles. In the second quarter of 2026 the Attiki Odos ADT grew another 2.6% to around 293,000 vehicles and the Egnatia Odos traffic surged 4.8% to about 205,000 vehicles, reflecting stronger passenger and freight movements.
To accommodate ongoing works, new traffic regulations were introduced on the ATHE (Athens‑Thessaloniki‑Evyzos) motorway between kilometre 90.95 and 89.2, closing the right lane and directing drivers to use the left lane. Separate road‑maintenance activities also caused temporary lane closures on the same stretch.
Rail services were disrupted when a fire near Menidi forced Hellenic Train to suspend suburban lines between SKA‑Dekelia and Piraeus‑Kato Acharni, with restoration efforts ongoing.
