Gen Z drinking habits show shift toward sobriety and wellness

Generation Z is reshaping alcohol consumption patterns, characterized by a trend toward moderation and sobriety. According to the Ipsos Generations 2026 report, young people are delaying wine consumption until a more mature age, often preferring spirits instead. This delay is attributed to high costs, changing social habits, and a focus on different lifestyle milestones.

Research from the Skyline Recovery Center and IWSR indicates that approximately 24% of Gen Z adults do not consume alcohol at all, while another 21% deliberately moderate their intake. Key drivers for this shift include personal wellness, with 46% citing physical health as a primary motivator, followed by financial savings (37%) and mental health improvements (29%).

Economic factors play a significant role, as those who cut back report saving an average of $1,200 annually. Additionally, social preferences are evolving, with 69% of Gen Z adults who date expressing a preference for activities involving little to no alcohol.
