Mexico insecurity perception hits 13-year low at 58.1%
According to the latest National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) from INEGI, the perception of insecurity in Mexico's 91 urban areas fell to 58.1% in September 2026. This represents a decrease from 59.8% in June 2026 and is the lowest level recorded since the survey began 13 years ago.
While the national trend shows improvement, significant regional disparities persist. Ten major cities maintain an insecurity perception above 80%, led by Irapuato, Guanajuato, at 90.5%, followed by Chilpancingo, Guerrero, at 86.9%, and Mazatlán, Sinaloa, at 85.8%. In the State of Mexico, municipalities like Ecatepec (77.4%) and Chimalhuacán (79.6%) remain among the most insecure.
Conversely, several cities reported notable improvements. San Francisco de Campeche saw a reduction from 65.9% to 49.6%, while Tlalnepantla de Baz dropped to 59.3%. In Michoacán, Morelia's insecurity perception fell to 67.7%, and Uruapan improved to 80%, moving out of the top five most insecure cities. The safest areas include San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, at 5.8%, and the Benito Juárez borough in Mexico City at 13.8%.
Federal officials noted that 28 cities showed significant improvements compared to September 2025. Additionally, the percentage of the population reporting witnessing or hearing robberies near their homes fell to 45.3%, the lowest level since 2013.
