Dorin Ioniță, former Romanian military general, found dead

Lieutenant General (reserve) Dorin Ioniță, former commander of the Joint Forces Command, was found dead on September 11 in his residence in Păulești, Prahova. Investigators found a legally owned firearm near his body, leading to the initial hypothesis of suicide.

The death occurred one day after a 46-year-old woman, a former colleague of Ioniță, reported being physically assaulted by him. Following the report, a provisional protection order was issued in his name.

Ioniță was buried on September 15 at the Voluntari Municipal Cemetery. The ceremony was held in military uniform but without religious services or military honors, a practice often applied by the Orthodox Church in cases of suicide. Former Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă attended the funeral but made no statements.

Details regarding Ioniță’s estate have emerged, including properties in Voluntari and Bucharest, several vehicles, and significant assets. Reports indicate a long-term personal relationship between the general and the woman involved in the assault report, which was known to some close associates.
