Death of former Romanian General Dorin Ioniță

Dorin Ioniță, a former Romanian Army Lieutenant General (Reserve), was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head on September 11 in a building in Păulești, Prahova County. Authorities are investigating the death, with suicide being the primary hypothesis, as a legally owned pistol was recovered near his body.

The incident follows a period of legal and personal conflict. Prior to his death, surveillance footage captured Ioniță physically assaulting a 46-year-old woman, a former athlete and military officer. This led police to issue a five-day provisional protection order requiring him to stay at least 200 meters away from the victim. Reports indicate that Ioniță and the woman had a long-term personal relationship known to some close associates.

Ioniță was buried on September 15 at the Voluntari Municipal Cemetery. Although he was buried in military uniform, the ceremony was held without religious services or military honors, a practice often applied by the Orthodox Church in cases of suicide. Former Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă attended the funeral but made no statements.

Ioniță had a prominent military career, including serving as the commander of the ‘General Ioan Emanoil Florescu’ Joint Forces Command from 2017 to 2023. Details regarding his estate have emerged, including properties in Voluntari and Bucharest, several vehicles, and significant assets.
