General Motors manages vehicle data privacy and new fleet AI tools

General Motors and its OnStar division are navigating both regulatory scrutiny and new product launches regarding vehicle data. In January 2026, the Federal Trade Commission finalized an order against the company following allegations that it collected and sold precise geolocation and driving-behavior data without informed consent. As part of the settlement, GM faces a five-year ban on sharing such behavior data with consumer reporting agencies.

This data collection, which includes speed, timestamps, and location, is increasingly being used in legal contexts. Driving behavior logs are being utilized in traffic violation files, prosecutions, and civil cases, particularly in instances involving reckless driving allegations or contested vehicle crashes.

Concurrently, GM has expanded its data services with the launch of OnStar Fleet Intelligence. This AI-powered platform is designed for fleet operators to manage vehicle data, asset productivity, and risk management through a single dashboard. The system allows for remote access to diagnostics, telematics, and fuel efficiency data to help businesses optimize operating costs.
