General Motors OnStar service and data management
Overview
General Motors has reached a 30-year milestone for its OnStar connectivity service, which serves over 12 million subscribers globally across 22 markets. To expand its data capabilities, the company launched the OnStar Fleet Intelligence platform, an AI-powered tool designed to help fleet managers track asset productivity, fuel efficiency, and operating costs through a unified dashboard.
However, the company continues to manage regulatory challenges regarding vehicle data. Following allegations that it collected and sold precise geolocation and driving-behavior data without informed consent, the Federal Trade Commission finalized an order in January 2026. As part of a settlement, GM is subject to a five-year ban on sharing such behavior data with consumer reporting agencies. This data, including speed and location, is increasingly being utilized in legal contexts such as traffic violations and civil cases involving vehicle crashes.
Looking toward 2027, GM plans to transform OnStar into a personalized AI-powered assistant capable of understanding and predicting driver needs via natural language voice commands. This integration will include features such as managing schedules, adjusting vehicle settings, and providing live camera feeds. To consolidate its digital ecosystem, GM intends to replace standalone Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick applications with a single, unified OnStar smartphone app. The rollout of these AI capabilities is expected to debut via over-the-air updates for the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq before expanding to other models.
