General Motors to reboot OnStar with integrated AI assistant
General Motors is transforming its OnStar service into a personalized AI-powered assistant designed to function across vehicles, smartphones, and the cloud. The new system aims to move beyond traditional telematics by providing a digital assistant capable of understanding and predicting driver needs, such as managing schedules or adjusting vehicle settings via voice control.
The AI integration will feature advanced capabilities, including connection to vehicle cameras to provide live feeds and automatic event recording for incidents like aggressive driving. GM plans to consolidate its digital ecosystem by replacing standalone Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick apps with a single, unified OnStar smartphone application in 2027.
The rollout will debut in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq via an over-the-air update, with plans to expand to other models, including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. While GM is developing much of this AI in-house to ensure deep integration with vehicle architecture, human operators will remain available for users who prefer speaking with a person.
