General Motors unveils new V8 engines and tech for 2027 trucks
General Motors has announced a significant powertrain and technology overhaul for its 2027 truck lineup, including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. A central feature is the introduction of the ‘Mongoose’, a new 8.3-liter V8 turbodiesel engine developed entirely in-house. This heavy-duty engine is expected to deliver 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque, positioning it as a segment leader in power and towing capacity.
Beyond the diesel updates, GM is upgrading its light-duty offerings with new naturally aspirated V8 Small Block engines. The 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter variants will replace the existing 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines, providing increased horsepower and torque through higher compression ratios and optimized airflow. Additionally, the midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are expected to receive an updated 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine.
Mechanical improvements extend to chassis and control systems. The 2027 heavy-duty models will feature a segment-first electric power steering system, offering 30 percent more assist than previous hydraulic setups. Other enhancements include upgraded electronic boost braking, revised chassis controls, and improved drive modes to enhance maneuvering and towing stability.
