Tegucigalpa is facing a severe water crisis, described by municipal authorities as a ‘water bankruptcy’ following the driest August in modern history. To mitigate the shortage, the Municipal District of Central (AMDC) and the Municipal Unit of Drinking Water and Sanitation (UMAPS) have implemented a rationing scheme, with water distributed roughly every nine days. Authorities have also reactivated the Los Almendros well, a project costing 1.3 million lempiras, which is expected to provide 300 gallons per minute to approximately 15,000 people in the boulevard circuit.

The Honduran government is coordinating a humanitarian response and has announced plans to mobilize approximately $182 million to strengthen water systems and support food security. While immediate measures like well rehabilitation and cistern distribution are underway, officials emphasize that long-term solutions, such as the San José dam project, are essential to prevent the crisis from extending into 2027.
