General Sergei Surovikin may return to plan strikes on Kyiv
Reports suggest the Kremlin may reinstate General Sergei Surovikin to assist in planning strikes against Kyiv. Surovikin, previously known for his role in the Syrian campaign around Aleppo and his leadership in Ukraine during the 2022 energy infrastructure attacks, could potentially bring Syrian-style tactics to the Ukrainian theater. These tactics often involve heavy aerial bombardment of residential areas, schools, and hospitals.
Analysts warn that potential Russian targets include critical infrastructure in Kyiv, specifically the bridges crossing the Dnipro River. While recent drone strikes on the North and South bridges caused only surface damage, experts suggest that seven bridges in the capital remain vulnerable. Significant damage to these structures would severely disrupt road and rail transport, severing connections between Kyiv and northern regions.
However, some military commentators express skepticism regarding Surovikin’s return to a high-level command position. Due to questions regarding his loyalty following the Wagner Group rebellion in June 2023, it is suggested he may only be assigned a staff role rather than a direct leadership post.
