Generation Z Chooses Home Over Nightlife, Survey Shows Rising Loneliness

A Harris Poll survey of Romanian Generation Z respondents reveals that more than half feel lonely on a typical weekend, with 51 % reporting loneliness – the highest rate among all age groups. Nearly half (49 %) say they lack enough friends for face‑to‑face time, and 65 % say most of their social interaction now occurs via phones rather than in person. About 74 % spend at least half of their weekends relaxing at home, and 73 % consider staying home their usual plan. A strong majority avoid noisy, expensive nightlife: 88 % actively steer clear of loud venues, and 73 % want social spaces where alcohol is not the main attraction. Financial constraints and health concerns are the primary reasons for this shift.

Across generations, standards of attractiveness have also evolved. Baby Boomers linked appeal to stability and reliability, Generation X valued independence, Millennials emphasized personality and emotional compatibility, while Generation Z now prioritises authenticity, mental‑health awareness and genuine connection over purely physical traits.
